Alcohol use test

Shows how your drinking over the past year compares with low-risk use, and whether it may be affecting your life. It is a screening, not a diagnosis.

What it measures

The AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) was developed by the World Health Organization (Saunders, Aasland, Babor, de la Fuente and Grant, 1993; guidelines by Babor, Higgins-Biddle, Saunders and Monteiro, 2001). Its 10 questions cover how much and how often you drink, signs of dependence and harm caused by drinking. Questions 1 to 8 score 0 to 4 points and questions 9 and 10 score 0, 2 or 4, so the total is 0 to 40. WHO groups totals into four zones: 0 to 7, 8 to 15, 16 to 19 and 20 to 40. Questions 2 and 3 count standard drinks, and WHO takes one as about 10 to 13 grams of pure alcohol: a 330 ml bottle of beer at 5%, a 140 ml glass of wine at 12% or a 40 ml shot of spirits at 40%.

This is not a diagnosis

The score describes a pattern of drinking, not a disorder. Only a doctor or an addiction specialist can assess dependence after a conversation. WHO notes that the zones can differ slightly between countries.
