What it measures
The Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ-40) by Andrews, Singh and Bond grew out of Bond's earlier questionnaire. Its 40 statements cover 20 defense mechanisms, two statements for each, such as humor, denial or projection. The defenses form three styles: mature, neurotic and immature. Each statement scores 1 to 9, and each style is the average of its statements, from 1 to 9.
This is not a diagnosis
The questionnaire describes habits, not disorders, and its authors give no cutoffs. Defense styles come from psychodynamic theory. Your answers show how you see yourself, and a therapist can help you look at them more closely.
