Jungian analysis questions

How do I choose a training in Jungian analysis?

Analyst training is run by IAAP group societies that hold training status, and the IAAP publishes the list by country. Compare what each requires before entry (a prior psychotherapy qualification, hours of personal analysis and supervision), whether teaching is in person or online, and how long the programme runs.

How is Jungian analysis different from psychoanalysis?

Jung broke with Freud in 1913 and built his own approach. The IAAP says analytical psychology shares an early-life focus and some concepts with psychoanalysis, but understands dreams and the deep psyche differently, adding the collective unconscious and archetypes.

Can I study Jungian psychology without training as an analyst?

Yes. Several societies run shorter courses for practising clinicians, for example the one-year online course on clinical practice from the Society of Analytical Psychology. Its page names no certificate or qualification, so check what any course certifies before you enrol.

Do I need a psychotherapy qualification before training?

Usually yes, and the details depend on the country and the society. The AJA in London asks for a UKCP- or BPC-recognised psychotherapy training, the Zurich diploma asks for a master-level degree in psychology or medicine, and the San Francisco institute asks for a California licence. Read the entry requirements of the programme you plan to apply to.
