Person-centered therapy: books, training, videos and associations

Person-centered therapy, developed by Carl Rogers from the 1940s, rests on three therapist attitudes: congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathic understanding. It is used in individual and group work and has grown into a wider person-centered approach.

Person-centered therapy questions

How do I choose a person-centered training?

Look at what the programme contains. PCE Europe’s standards describe experience of self-development in groups or therapy, study of Rogers and other theorists, application of the core conditions and supervised practice with clients. Then check who issues the award: a university, a professional body such as UKCP, or the provider itself.

Is client-centered therapy the same as the person-centered approach?

Client-centered is the name Rogers gave his therapy after his earlier non-directive method (the book Client-Centered Therapy appeared in 1951). Person-centered is the wider name: according to ADPCA, the approach is also applied in group work, organizations, education and other settings. Some authors keep the term for the classic approach only, others use it for later offshoots.

How is it different from emotion-focused therapy?

Rogers’ initial non-directive method avoided questions, interpretation and advice and relied on listening and reflecting. Emotion-focused therapy, developed by Greenberg, Elliott and others, grew out of the approach but adds Gestalt and other techniques to guide the process while keeping the relationship primary, as ADPCA describes.

Do I need a degree or licence to train?

It depends on the provider and the country. A master’s such as Metanoia’s normally expects a degree-level qualification and a UKCP preparatory year, while a creative arts certificate such as APCCA’s is open to people in counselling, coaching, education, healthcare and similar roles. Read the entry requirements of each programme.
