Motivational Interviewing for therapists: training, videos, organizations

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented way of talking with a person about change. The practitioner listens for how the person speaks about change and helps them voice their own reasons for it, without unsolicited advice, confronting or warnings.

Motivational Interviewing questions

How do I choose an MI training?

MINT membership shows that a trainer completed a MINT-approved training of new trainers; MINT says it is not a certificate of competence, and a separate voluntary Certified Trainer list exists. MINT advises checking the trainer’s background, asking for sample materials and checking references.

How long should an MI training be?

MINT’s guidance: a day or less gives an overview but is unlikely to build skill; an introductory workshop of 2-3 days (16-24 hours) aims to teach participants how to keep learning MI from practice. Feedback on recorded practice and ongoing coaching help most, while reading and videos alone were not effective in research by Miller and colleagues.

How is MI different from person-centered listening?

MINT places MI between following (good listening) and directing (giving information and advice): the practitioner listens, and also attends to change talk and strengthens motivation toward a specific goal the person has chosen. Miller and Moyers (2017) write about MI and the clinical science of Carl Rogers.

Do I need a particular degree or licence for an MI training?

Requirements depend on the country and the provider, and some programmes state none. Read the entry requirements on the programme page.
