Integrative questions

How do I choose an integrative psychotherapy training?

Look for a stated integration model rather than a loose mix of techniques, an accrediting body behind the programme (in the UK the UKCP college for humanistic and integrative trainings, in Europe EAIP) and the amount of supervised clinical practice. The Minster Centre MA in the UK, for example, requires 450 supervised clinical hours and weekly personal therapy during the course.

How is integrative psychotherapy different from eclectic practice?

EAIP describes integration as a conceptually coherent, principled combination of approaches. The Minster Centre says its founders wanted a training that is neither eclectic in the sense of including anything and everything, nor a rigidly defined new school.

Is there one integrative method with a fixed protocol?

No. The term covers several models and routes. EAIP counts as integrative any methodology that combines, or is developing towards combining, two or more approaches in a principled way, or that is a model of integration in its own right.

What are the entry requirements for an integrative training?

They depend on the country and the provider. As examples, the Minster Centre MA asks for prior integrative counselling training, at least 150 hours of practice, personal therapy hours and a first degree or equivalent evidence of postgraduate-level study; the Metanoia MSc normally expects its preparatory year or an equivalent qualification.
