Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI-16)

Sixteen questions show how satisfied you are with your relationship with a partner. You get a score from 0 to 81: the higher, the more satisfied, and a score below 51.5 points to notable dissatisfaction. It is a snapshot of how things feel now, not a verdict on the relationship.

What it measures

The Couples Satisfaction Index was developed by Jeffry Funk and Ronald Rogge (2007) using item response theory to measure satisfaction more precisely than older scales. The 16-item form mixes questions about happiness, how often things go well, how true statements about the relationship are, how rewarding it is, and six pairs of opposite words. Each answer scores 0 to 5 (the first question 0 to 6), for a total of 0 to 81. The authors state that scores below 51.5 suggest notable dissatisfaction.

This is not a verdict on your relationship

The score shows how satisfied you feel at the moment, not whether the relationship will last or whether to stay in it. Satisfaction changes with stress, health and time. A couples therapist can help make sense of it.

Your score is calculated right in your browser. Your answers reach our server only if you ask for your result by email: we write the email and do not keep them.

How is the CSI-16 different from the Relationship Assessment Scale?

Both measure satisfaction with a relationship. The CSI-16 has 16 questions and a published cutoff for notable dissatisfaction, while the RAS has 7 questions and no cutoff. For a shorter check, take the Relationship satisfaction test
