Burnout test, 12 questions (BAT-12)

Twelve questions show how much exhaustion, distance from work, and trouble with focus and emotions you notice at work. This is the short version of the Burnout Assessment Tool. It is quick to take, but it is a screen, not a diagnosis, and a high score is a reason to look closer.

BAT-12: 12 questions. Fuller: BAT, CBI.

What it measures

The Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) was developed at KU Leuven in Belgium by Schaufeli, De Witte and Desart. It describes burnout through four core symptoms: exhaustion, mental distance from work, cognitive impairment (trouble thinking and concentrating) and emotional impairment (trouble controlling emotions). The BAT-12 is the authors' own short version, with three questions for each symptom. Answers run from 1 (never) to 5 (always), and each score is the average of the answers, from 1 to 5.

This is not a diagnosis

Twelve questions give only a rough picture, and the authors themselves advise the full 23-question BAT for a closer look at one person. Burnout can look like depression, anxiety or a medical problem, so only a doctor or therapist can say what lies behind these symptoms.

Your score is calculated right in your browser. Your answers reach our server only if you ask for your result by email: we write the email and do not keep them.

How is the BAT-12 different from the full BAT?

The BAT-12 keeps three questions for each core symptom and takes about two minutes. The full BAT has 23 questions and a finer score. Its authors recommend it for looking closely at one person, because the scores of the four parts are less exact in the short version. If you want a closer look, take the full version: Burnout test, 23 questions (BAT)

What counts as a high score?

The authors' manual gives reference zones only for Flemish workers: a total from 2.54 marks a risk of burnout and from 2.96 a very high risk. Those limits were not set for this language version, so Sessio shows your averages without a verdict. A high number is a reason to talk to someone.
