What it measures
The Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) was developed at KU Leuven (Belgium) by Schaufeli, De Witte and Desart (2020) and tested on 1,500 Flemish employees. This page uses the 23 core statements of its work-related version: exhaustion (8), mental distance (5), cognitive impairment (5) and emotional impairment (5). Each answer scores from 1 (never) to 5 (always), and every result is the average of its answers. The authors' 10 extra statements on sleep, worry and physical complaints are not included.
This is not a diagnosis
Burnout cannot be diagnosed from a questionnaire alone: the authors say it takes an interview with a trained professional. Exhaustion can also come from depression or an illness, so if it does not pass, see a doctor too.
What happens to your answers
Your score is calculated right in your browser. Your answers reach our server only if you ask for your result by email: we write the email and do not keep them.
How is the BAT different from the CBI?
The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI, Denmark, 2005) has 19 statements and rates personal, work-related and client-related burnout from 0 to 100. The BAT (Belgium, 2020) has 23 statements about work and also asks about concentration, thinking and control of emotions. Neither is a diagnosis. For the Copenhagen inventory, take: Burnout test
What score counts as high on the BAT?
The authors give cut-off scores only for Flemish employees: an average of 2.59 or more across all 23 statements is their orange zone (at risk) and 3.02 or more their red zone (very high risk). They come from a Flemish sample, and the authors advise local norms for other countries, so this page shows your scores without levels. Compare the four dimensions with each other.
I am not working right now. Can I take the BAT?
This is the work-related version, and every statement refers to your work. For people who are not currently working the authors made a general version in which most statements do not mention work. It is not on this page.

Send scales to clients and watch the change in their card
The client takes the test from a link, no account needed. The result lands in their card and Sessio compares it with last time.
