Career interests test (Holland RIASEC)

Thirty short descriptions of work activities show which kinds of work you would enjoy most. You rate each one from strongly dislike to strongly like, and the test scores your interest in six Holland types: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional. It takes about five minutes and is a starting point for exploring careers, not a diagnosis.

What it measures

This is the O*NET® Mini Interest Profiler (Mini-IP Version 2.0), a free career exploration tool from the U.S. Department of Labor, built on Holland's RIASEC model of vocational interests. Each of the 30 activities is answered from 0 (Strongly Dislike) to 4 (Strongly Like), five activities per type. The O*NET Interest Profiler adds the five answers for each type (0 to 20); this page shows the same result as an average from 0 to 4, which is the sum divided by 5. There is no total score and there are no cut-offs: what matters is which types come out highest.

This is not a diagnosis

The Mini-IP is a career exploration tool, not a clinical test: it shows what kinds of work you would like to do, not how you are doing mentally. It does not say which job to take or how well you would do it, and interests can change over time. The O*NET Interest Profiler Manual recommends it from about age 14. Use the result together with your skills, values and circumstances, and talk it over with a career counselor or a therapist.

What happens to your answers

Your score is calculated right in your browser. Your answers reach our server only if you ask for your result by email: we write the email and do not keep them.

Will this test tell me which career to choose?

No. It shows which kinds of work activities appeal to you most, which is a useful place to start looking. The O*NET Interest Profiler Manual stresses that vocational interests are one of many factors that determine career choices and success, so weigh your result against your skills, values and circumstances.

How do I read my scores and my Holland code?

Compare the six scores with each other, not with other people: this page has no norm tables. Put the three types with the highest scores in order and take their first letters. This is your Holland code, for example SIA for Social, Investigative, Artistic. If two types are tied, choose the one whose activities fit you better.

Why only 30 questions, and how accurate is that?

The Mini-IP is the 30-question short version of the 60-question Interest Profiler Short Form, made for quick completion on a phone: five questions per type. The O*NET report on the Mini-IP gives slightly lower reliability for it (Cronbach's alpha .70 to .75 for the six scales, against .78 to .87 for the Short Form), and the Manual prefers the Short Form when time is not a constraint (Rounds, Wee, Cao, Song and Lewis, 2016).
