Five questions about the last four weeks show how often you felt nervous, down, calm and happy. It is a quick screen of everyday mental health, not a diagnosis: a low score is a reason to look closer and talk to a professional.
The MHI-5 is the five-item mental health scale of the RAND 36-Item Health Survey, built on the Mental Health Inventory (Veit and Ware, 1983) and validated as a short screen by Berwick and colleagues in 1991. Each answer scores 1 to 6, two positive items (calm, happy) are reversed, and the total runs from 5 to 30, higher meaning better. RAND converts it to 0 to 100 as (total minus 5) divided by 25, times 100. Sessio shows the 5 to 30 total.
This is not a diagnosis
The MHI-5 shows how you have felt recently. It cannot tell depression or an anxiety disorder from a hard month. Only a doctor or therapist can make a diagnosis after a conversation.
What happens to your answers
Your score is calculated right in your browser. Your answers reach our server only if you ask for your result by email: we write the email and do not keep them.
Is a lower or a higher score better?
Higher is better: 30 means you felt calm and happy most of the time and rarely nervous or down. The score drops as nervousness and low mood become more frequent.
Can I compare it with a well-being check?
The WHO-5 asks about the last two weeks and covers energy and interest as well. If you want a second view, take it: Well-being test

For therapists
Send scales to clients and watch the change in their card
The client takes the test from a link, no account needed. The result lands in their card and Sessio compares it with last time.
