Life satisfaction test (SWLS)

Five statements show how satisfied you are with your life as a whole, judged by your own standards. It takes about a minute. Your score runs from 5 to 35 and falls into one of six ranges, from extremely dissatisfied to very satisfied. It is not a diagnosis.

What it measures

The SWLS measures global life satisfaction: how you judge your life against the standards you set for yourself, not your mood today. Each of the five statements is rated from 1 to 7, so the total is 5 to 35. A score of 30 to 35 is very high, 20 to 24 is average, and 9 or below means extreme dissatisfaction (Diener et al., 1985).

This is not a diagnosis

A low score does not mean depression, and a high one does not rule it out. The scale shows how you rate your life right now, and that can shift after a loss or a good year. If a low score matches how you feel, talk to a therapist or a doctor.

What is a normal score on the SWLS?

Diener describes 20 to 24 as the average in economically developed countries: most people are generally satisfied but want to improve some areas. For a look at how you have felt over the last two weeks, take this test: Well-being test
