Coping with stress test (Brief COPE)

Twenty-eight short statements show how you have been dealing with stress lately. The result is a profile of 14 coping strategies, from planning and seeking support to humor and avoidance. There is no total score and no good or bad strategy: it shows what you reach for most often.

What it measures

The Brief COPE was published by Charles Carver in 1997 as a short form of the COPE Inventory. Each of 14 strategies is the average of two statements, rated from 1 (not at all) to 4 (a lot). Carver recommends reading each strategy on its own: there is no overall score and no official split into healthy and unhealthy ones.

This is not a diagnosis

The Brief COPE is a research questionnaire. It describes what you do under stress, not whether it works, and it has no cut-offs. The same strategy can help in one situation and not in another.

What happens to your answers

Your score is calculated right in your browser. Your answers reach our server only if you ask for your result by email: we write the email and do not keep them.

Why is there no total score?

The author says there is no such thing as an overall coping score and does not recommend adding strategies into groups. Each of the 14 strategies is read separately.

Which situation should I think of?

The statements ask about the stress in your life lately. If you have one specific situation in mind, think of that one while you answer.
