Shows how often you have felt positive and negative feelings over the last four weeks, scored separately. The SPANE takes about two minutes. It describes your emotional life lately and is not a diagnosis.
The SPANE (Diener and colleagues, 2009) has 12 feelings rated from 1 (very rarely or never) to 5 (very often or always). Six are positive and six negative, and each group is shown as an average from 1 to 5. The authors also give an affect balance: positive minus negative, from -24 to +24, using the sums of 6 to 30 each. The page shows the two averages, so for the balance multiply each by 6 and subtract.
This is not a diagnosis
The test counts how often you felt things, not whether something is wrong. The authors publish no cutoffs. A low positive or high negative score is a reason to look at your last weeks, and to talk to a professional if it weighs on you.
What happens to your answers
Your score is calculated right in your browser. Your answers reach our server only if you ask for your result by email: we write the email and do not keep them.
How do I get the affect balance?
Multiply the positive average by 6 and the negative average by 6, then subtract the second from the first. The result runs from -24 to +24, and higher means positive feelings dominate.
