Work stress test

Shows which parts of your job put pressure on you and which hold you up: workload, control over your work, support from your manager and colleagues, relationships, clarity of your role and how change is handled. It rates working conditions, not you.

What it measures

The Management Standards Indicator Tool was developed by the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to see how employees rate seven sources of work stress. Each statement is answered from 1 to 5 over the last six months, twelve are scored in reverse, and each of the seven areas is the average of its statements: higher is better and 5 is the best. There is no overall total. The levels compare your average with a 2004 survey of about 2,000 workers in Great Britain (HSE Analysis Tool).

This rates your job, not you

HSE designed the tool for groups of employees, so one person's scores are a prompt for thought, not a measure of how stressed you are. Poor working conditions and personal stress are related but not the same. If work is affecting your health, talk to a doctor or a therapist.

What happens to your answers

Your score is calculated right in your browser. Your answers reach our server only if you ask for your result by email: we write the email and do not keep them.

Can I show this result to my employer?

It describes how you see your own job over the last six months. HSE built the tool for whole teams and recommends discussing results with colleagues, so treat a single result as a starting point for a conversation with your manager, a union representative or a therapist.

What if I feel burnt out?

Burnout is about exhaustion, which this tool does not measure. To look at it directly, take the burnout test: Burnout test
